What Is User Acquisition (UA)?

The full discipline of winning new users for your mobile app through paid and organic channels.

User Acquisition (UA) covers all the marketing activities aimed at bringing new users to a mobile app. It includes paid ad campaigns, ASO, influencer partnerships and organic growth channels. Success isn't measured by install volume but by whether the LTV of acquired users exceeds the cost of acquiring them.

UA channels

How do you set up a UA campaign?

  1. Nail down your unit economics. You can't set a target CPI without knowing your net LTV. Skip this step and losses grow as the campaign scales.
  2. Set up measurement. Your MMP, event architecture and SKAN schema should be ready before the campaign launches.
  3. Prioritize channels. Instead of spreading across every channel at once, start with meaningful volume on two or three.
  4. Build a creative pipeline. Creative is the single biggest driver of UA performance; build the capacity for continuous production and testing.
  5. Respect the learning phase. Intervening too early keeps the algorithm from optimizing.
  6. Scale by cohort. Gradually increase budget in segments where D7 ROAS is above target.

What happens when you scale?

The most common surprise in UA is performance deteriorating as budget increases. There are three structural reasons for this:

  • Audience saturation: The easiest-to-convert users are acquired first; as budget grows you reach harder-to-convince segments, and CPI rises.
  • Creative exhaustion: Wider reach means creatives fatigue faster.
  • Auction pressure: Raising your own bids pushes up prices for the same inventory.

That's why scaling should be gradual — typically in 20-30% steps in daily budget — with cohort performance reassessed at every step.

How do you measure UA success?

  • Cohort ROAS, not install count: D7 and D30 ROAS being above target is what matters.
  • Payback period: How many months it takes to recoup acquisition cost is critical for cash flow.
  • Retention by channel: Channels that deliver different retention at the same CPI are effectively priced differently.
  • Blended efficiency: Paid campaigns' contribution to organic downloads should be factored in.

Frequently asked questions

How much budget should you start UA with?

There's no fixed number; what matters is generating enough conversion volume for the algorithm to learn. If the budget is too low to produce a meaningful number of conversions per week, the campaign can't exit the learning phase. In that case, focusing on a single channel is more efficient than splitting across several.

Should organic or paid come first?

They feed each other. Paid campaigns lift store rankings and drive more organic downloads; strong ASO raises paid traffic conversion and lowers CPI. If resources are limited, optimizing store listing conversion first makes every paid dollar more efficient from the start.

When should you pause a UA campaign?

When, after enough data has accumulated, cohort ROAS is clearly below target and you've exhausted improvements on creative, targeting and the funnel. Deciding based on early-day data risks shutting down a channel that would actually have been profitable.
