What Is CTR? (Click-Through Rate)

A measure of interest: the percentage of people who see your ad or link and click it.

CTR (Click-Through Rate) is the ratio of clicks an ad or link receives to the number of impressions. It's expressed as a percentage using (Clicks ÷ Impressions) × 100. An ad that gets 3,000 clicks from 200,000 impressions has a CTR of 1.5%. It's the fastest feedback you get on whether your message and creative are sparking interest in your target audience.

How to calculate CTR

CTR = (Clicks ÷ Impressions) × 100The result is read as a percentage, e.g. 1.5%.

The same formula applies to both paid ads and organic search results. The CTR you see in Google Search Console is the number of clicks you got relative to how many times your site appeared in search results; the logic is exactly the same.

What is a good CTR?

CTR has no absolute threshold; the "normal" range varies widely by channel, format and search intent. The figures below are general reference points; comparing against your own historical data is always more accurate.

Channel / contextTypical rangeNote
Meta (Facebook & Instagram)%0,8 – %2For video creatives, hook quality is decisive
TikTok%1 – %3UGC formats produce noticeably higher CTR
Google Search Network%3 – %6Runs higher because ads closely match search intent
Google Display Network%0,3 – %0,7Low-intent inventory
Organic search (position 1)%25 – %35Drops quickly as ranking falls

Critical caveat: a high CTR alone isn't success. A creative that sparks curiosity but misrepresents the product pushes CTR up, then users leave without converting. In that case CTR rises while CPI and ROAS get worse.

Why did my CTR drop?

  • Ad fatigue: Engagement falls when the same audience sees the same ad over and over. If frequency has passed 3-4, this is the first suspect.
  • Audience saturation: Once the target audience is exhausted, the algorithm starts reaching less interested users.
  • Message-audience mismatch: The creative is good, but it's being shown to the wrong segment.
  • Seasonal shifts in attention: User behavior changes around major events and holidays.
  • Competitive pressure: Competitors entering the same audience with stronger creatives reduce your relative share of attention.

How to raise CTR

In paid ads

  • Invest in the first 3 seconds: in video creatives, the hook is the biggest driver of CTR.
  • Deliver a single, clear benefit; cramming multiple messages into one creative weakens the impact.
  • Test UGC and formats featuring real users; especially on TikTok and Reels, they outperform studio polish.
  • Put creative rotation on a schedule; refresh regularly instead of waiting for fatigue.
  • Make social proof (download counts, ratings, awards) visible in on-screen text.

In organic search

  • Match your title tag exactly to the search query and keep it to 55-60 characters.
  • Write the meta description as a promise; don't copy the page's body text.
  • Add structured data (FAQ, product, breadcrumb) to take up more space in the results.
  • Keep URLs short, readable and free of special or non-ASCII characters.

Frequently asked questions

High CTR but no conversions: what's wrong?

It's usually a promise mismatch between the creative and the destination. The ad says one thing, and the store page or landing page shows another. Delivering the ad's core message verbatim on the first screen of the destination closes most of that gap.

Does CTR affect ad costs?

Yes, directly. Platforms reward engaging ads with cheaper inventory. A high CTR lowers CPC and gets you more impressions for the same budget. That's why CTR is also read as a quality signal.

Why does my CTR in Search Console look so low?

Usually the query-page match is weak or your ranking sits toward the bottom of page one. If your average position is above 10, a low CTR is expected; the right order is to improve rankings first, then optimize the title and description.
